SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — Russian troops surrounded a military base on Sunday as the security crisis escalated in Ukraine's Crimea region.

No shots were fired in what appeared to be the first direct confrontation between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Russian troops did not fire a single shot. They don't need to. With rocket-propelled grenades at the ready, they took Crimea without resistance, with the support of many in the region.

The base standoff is another sign of Russia's tightening grip on Crimea -- its influence elsewhere in Russia-friendly eastern Ukraine.
Fighting broke out in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, after local militias stopped pro-Western demonstrators who tried to attack another Lenin statue.
The scenes underscore the problems facing Ukraine's interim leaders, who are powerless to prevent the loss of Crimea.
